Place about a cup of balsamic in a saucepan, bring it to a boil, then reduce heat to simmer and cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. It will continue to thicken after being removed from the heat. If you need to salvage a hardened reduction, reheat it and add a bit of water.
